How Will Your Story End?

What will be your last words? Joshua says that he is going the way of all the earth (23:14). Ultimately all of us will face a day like this unless the Lord returns first, and we will speak our last words What would you want to tell someone with your last words? Thinking about that day and preparing those words is an important exercise.

As a blessing to us, we have the final words of Joshua recorded for us and I want us to parallel what Moses did with his final words in (Deuteronomy 30:19-20) of setting before the people life and death. These chapters give us the path to death (23:1-16) and the path to life (24:1-28) and leaves us with a question of how we will finish our story (24:29-33).

The Path to Death (23:1-16)

The section begins with fast forwarding in the story and Yahweh had given rest to Israel from all their enemies, Joshua is advanced in age, and Joshua is calling together all the people before his death. He begins with reminding them of God’s faithfulness in the past to fight for them and that the inheritance is before them, and God will continue fighting for them to inherit the land. The key for them is right here in verse 6. They must be very strong to keep and do all that was written in the book of the law of Moses to not turn to the left or the right. This is a reminder to the writings of Moses and echoes what Joshua had been told by God for him to have success in (Joshua 1:7-8). These people had to be in the word of God every day and remind themselves of the story and God’s law to be faithful.

However, Joshua takes a negative turn here and tells them exactly what will happen if they do not do this and shows them exactly how they will follow the path of ruin, failure, and ultimately death. It’s important for us to see this because this is the same exact pattern we can fall into, and the consequences will be the same. Joshua has given them a six-step process that will happen unless they are strong and keep the law of Moses – (Joshua 23:7-13).

First, they will go along with these nations which remained among them. They were to remove them, but if they did not this would happen. They will spend time together, form relationships and friendships, they will work together, they will live together, they will influence one another, and the evil influence will rub off on Israel.

Second, they will make mention of the name of their gods. These gods that were supposed to be utterly cut off and removed from among them were now passing from what they heard around them to being spoken on their lips themselves. There would be discussion about these gods. Deuteronomy 12:30 describes something similar – it is an ensnaring process where they inquire after their gods and ask about how they serve them to do likewise.

Third, they will swear by their gods. This is a deeper step in giving their allegiance to them. It’s more than making mention of them, it is calling on them and making vows to them. This is making the commitment to them personal.

Fourth, they will serve them. Now it has passed beyond what they say and has started to take control over them. They are doing their will. They are giving their lives over to them.

Fifth, they bow down to them. Now they are giving their loyalty and pleading submission to these images of created men. They are saying they rely on them and live because of them.

Then there is one final and ultimate threat to these people and their allegiance to God that will secure their failure and death – Sixth, they will intermarry with them. Marriage is the most powerful human relationship that a person shares. God shows here that this is where their great threat lies. This will be a snare, a trap, a whip, and thorns until they perish off the good land.

The foolishness of all of this is that these are the same great and mighty nations and their gods that Yahweh had already dispossessed before them and the same people that walked in fear of Israel. But now they are bowing down to their past defeated enemies.

Now notice what Joshua does here in 23:14-16. This section sounds like the wonderful promises that we had back in (21:43-45) of what God had done for Israel. It does have those elements but notice how Joshua gives the warning of how just as God kept the good words and blessing, God will bring the calamitous words on them until they are destroyed. When the people go into transgression, serve other gods, and bow down to them, God’s anger will burn, and they will perish. They must not deceive themselves. God always keeps his word.

Brethren let’s hear the warning of Joshua at the end of his life. This is divine wisdom for each of us. All of us at the core of our beings are worshippers. God made us to worship – it will be either him or for something else. As such, we need to realize the enticing and ensnaring nature of idolatry and sin in our lives. Joshua had seen this in his life with the generations of the people of Israel and in his last words is passionately warning Israel to not repeat the mistake!

I recently was on Facebook and saw an illustration example of a man who had little snake that he thought was innocent and it began to grow. Eventually it grew larger and started to take his arm, then it was controlling his leg, eventually it was wrapping around him, and eventually it was ready to devour him. That’s an illustration of what Joshua is describing here. What we feed is what grows. No one starts into sin and thinks “I know this is going to destroy my life and I want to throw my life away.” But that’s where it ends as sins’ power grows to take us over.

The threat of idolatry is real – Romans 1:18-23 (24-32). Who are the people who you surround yourself with and spend your time with? Are you interested in the same type of interests and passions as the world? Are you talking about the same desires as the world? Are you giving over your time, energy, and efforts to “serve” those things? Have you given your allegiance to them, and you are unwilling to separate yourselves and you can’t imagine a life without them?

And let me give a very strong warning: Many times, this begins with the person that you find physically attractive, and you want to marry. Friendships can be disastrous, but marrying the wrong person can be even worse. A couple weeks ago we talked about how God keeps 100% of his promises. We have the same promises about these things – They will be a snare, a trap, a whip, and thorns, and we will perish (Joshua 23:13). You and I have seen it. God in his wisdom through Joshua is warning us! Please listen! The end of that way is death.

The Path to Life (24:1-28)

Now, in contrast we have chapter 24 and we have here the path of life and how to fight back idolatry and its disastrous effects in our lives and (Romans 1:18-23) shows the keys.

First, we need the truth of what God has done and remember his war against unrighteousness. Paul says in Romans 1:18-20 that these people suppressed the truth in unrighteous and denied the clear evidence around them and that led them on the road to idolatry and death. Notice in 24:2-13 how often the pronoun I is recorded – 17 times God identifies himself and it is tied to the amazing things God has done. God has been at this fight against idolatry and human evil for a very long time and it is seen in the story of Israel. God brought Abraham from an idolatrous family. God chose Jacob over Esau. God judged the idolatrous nation of Egypt. God judged and fought the idolatrous Amorites. God protected them from the evil king Balak that seduced Balaam. God delivered the people. God fought for them. God gave them victory. God gave them the land. To this point, it has been God’s story!

The path to life then is to remember, remember, remember. The reason they are reading their Bibles morning and evening is to remind them of that story and to remember how God is making them holy and separate from the evil nations and idols that are around them! Brethren, the truth of God’s word and seeing God’s power is a strong defense against the lies the devil will tell us. It’s easy to believe the lie (Romans 1:25). It’s easy to not keep God in our mind and acknowledge him (Romans 1:28). We need God’s word morning and evening to keep us from turning to the left or the right and to keep us on the path of success.

That then leads us into the next step on the path of life. Second, they were to be glorify God and be thankful. Paul said the next step on the road to Idolatry was that people did not glorify Him as God or give thanks (Romans 1:21) Why did Joshua tell all these things? Was it simply to relay facts to them and fill their heads with knowledge? No! It was to help them build a heart that glorifies God and is thankful to him. Glorifying God is centered around praising him for all his wonderful works and the things he has done for us that we could never do for ourselves. Then, after pondering on those amazing works, we are overwhelmed with thankfulness! Why was that generation faithful? Why did they stay loyal to God? They had seen what God had done and they remembered it (24:16-18). Brethren, thankfulness, and gratitude form a strong defense against the temptation. If you think that God has not done enough in your life. That God is holding out on you. That God doesn’t want what’s best for you. Then you are at great risk to the temptations of the devil. The solution is to glorify God for his amazing works and be thankful for what he has done. Count your blessings. Consider how much God has done!

Third, we must fully commit to God. Joshua 24:14-15 is perhaps the most famous scripture in the entire book and for good reason. Joshua is calling on them to decide – either serve Yahweh who has done so much for you or go and worship the gods Terah served or the ones of the Amorites. Decide! Do it today. Gather the facts and set your mind on the road you are going to go on. Don’t stay in indecision, compromise, and apathy. If Yahweh is God serve him! And this is a decision that every person must make. Fathers, make this decision for your family. Be fully committed. Follow the pattern of success and victory that Joshua had followed. Dig into the word like your life depends on it. Obey him as if your life depended on it. Teach and guide your family like their life depends on it. Commit to him!

The people say in 16-18 “Far be it from us that we should forsake Yahweh to serve other gods” and “We also will serve Yahweh, for He is our God.” – Amen! That’s what we should all say. But look at this warning from Joshua in v. 19 “You will not be able to serve Yahweh, for He is a holy God. He is a jealous God…” That sounds like a downer in some ways. Why is he doing this? Because he is calling them to be witnesses because they have foreign gods among them.

See, many people can verbally say what the Israelites say here, but if you look a little closer, they still have their idols with them. Jacob had idols in his household. The Israelites brought their idols up from Egypt. The idols are still there and threatening. God is a jealous God, like a jealous husband. He demands the complete faithfulness of his people. No compromises. Why? Because he loves them and has done everything for them. He has been faithful. They must be!

Then the ultimate picture here is of them cutting a covenant, making a statue and judgment, writing the words in the book of the law of God, and setting up a witness. This is our fourth and final step – we must build in reminders of God’s promises and our commitment. We have highlighted the ever-present danger of forgetfulness. God knows this and has given covenants, rules, the word of God, and physical reminders all to help the people remember this day. All of these are like watching your wedding day every year and having pictures of it all around your house. Why? To remember on the hard days. To keep your heart from wandering. That’s the value of daily bible reading and having scripture all around you. It keeps us focused!

How will you finish your story? (Joshua 24:29-33)

This book ends with Joshua and Eleazar dying and with them burying the bones of Joseph. That generation was faithful till that generation passed away. The faithful generation has passed the baton to the next generation. Yet tragically the next generation failed in Judges.

That begs the question – how will we live? What will our story be? We will go the way of all the earth like Joshua and these people. Generations will change. Will we be faithful? Notice the story of Joseph and what it means for us. Joseph was faithful because he believed in God, his word, and his promises. He trusted in what God did through Joshua to bring them into the land. He was faithful in a world that was surrounded by idolatry - Hebrews 11:22.

We have a promise of a greater Joshua in Jesus who gives us his Spirit now to change our hearts where we can obey where Israel failed. But while Joshua secured a homeland through violence that was lost in unfaithfulness, Jesus promises us a perfect land, a new heavens and new earth where righteousness dwells and he secured that by taking all human violence on himself. Will you be like Joseph and Joshua and live your whole life and die in faith?

¿Cómo terminará tu historia?

¿Cuáles serán tus últimas palabras? Josué dice que va por el camino de toda la tierra (23:14). En última instancia, todos enfrentaremos un día como este a menos que el Señor regrese primero, y diremos nuestras últimas palabras: ¿Qué te gustaría decirle a alguien con tus últimas palabras? Pensar en ese día y preparar esas palabras es un ejercicio importante.

Como una bendición para nosotros, tenemos las últimas palabras de Josué registradas para nosotros y quiero que hagamos un paralelo con lo que Moisés hizo con sus últimas palabras en (Deuteronomio 30:19-20) de poner delante del pueblo la vida y la muerte. Estos capítulos nos dan el camino a la muerte (23:1-16) y el camino a la vida (24:1-28) y nos dejan con la pregunta de cómo terminaremos nuestra historia (24:29-33).

El camino a la muerte (23:1-16)

La sección comienza con un avance rápido en la historia y Yahweh había dado descanso a Israel de todos sus enemigos, Josué es de edad avanzada y Josué está convocando a todo el pueblo antes de su muerte. Comienza recordándoles la fidelidad de Dios en el pasado para luchar por ellos y que la herencia está delante de ellos, y Dios seguirá luchando por ellos para que hereden la tierra. La clave para ellos está aquí mismo, en el versículo 6. Deben ser muy fuertes para guardar y hacer todo lo que estaba escrito en el libro de la ley de Moisés para no voltear a la izquierda ni a la derecha. Este es un recordatorio de los escritos de Moisés y hace eco de lo que Josué le había dicho Dios para que tuviera éxito (Josué 1:7-8). Estas personas tenían que estar en la palabra de Dios todos los días y recordarse a sí mismas la historia y la ley de Dios para ser fieles.

Sin embargo, Josué toma un giro negativo aquí y les dice exactamente lo que sucederá si no lo hacen y les muestra exactamente cómo seguirán el camino de la ruina, el fracaso y, en última instancia, la muerte. Es importante que veamos esto porque este es exactamente el mismo patrón en el que podemos caer, y las consecuencias serán las mismas. Josué les ha dado un proceso de seis pasos que sucederá a menos que sean fuertes y guarden la ley de Moisés (Josué 23:7-13).

Primero, ellos estarán de acuerdo con estas naciones que permanecieron entre ellos. Debían eliminarlos, pero si no lo hacían, esto sucedería. Pasarán tiempo juntos, formarán relaciones y amistades, trabajarán juntos, vivirán juntos, se influirán mutuamente y la influencia maligna se contagiará a Israel.

En segundo lugar, harán mención del nombre de sus dioses. Estos dioses, que se suponía que estaban completamente cortados y removidos de entre ellos, ahora pasaban de lo que escuchaban a su alrededor a ser hablados en sus labios mismos. Habría una discusión sobre estos dioses. Deuteronomio 12:30 describe algo similar: es un proceso atrapante en el que indagan sobre sus dioses y preguntan cómo les sirven para hacer lo mismo.

En tercer lugar, jurarán por sus dioses. Este es un paso más profundo para darles su lealtad. Es más que hacer mención de ellos, es llamarlos y hacerles votos. Esto hace que el compromiso con ellos sea personal.

Cuarto, les servirán. Ahora ha ido más allá de lo que dicen y ha comenzado a tomar el control sobre ellos. Están haciendo su voluntad. Les están entregando sus vidas.

Quinto, se inclinan ante ellos. Ahora están dando su lealtad y suplicando sumisión a estas imágenes de hombres creados. Dicen que confían en ellos y viven gracias a ellos.

Luego hay una amenaza final y definitiva para estas personas y su lealtad a Dios que asegurará su fracaso y muerte: sexto, se casarán con ellos. El matrimonio es la relación humana más poderosa que una persona comparte. Dios muestra aquí que aquí es donde radica su gran amenaza. Esto será un lazo, una trampa, un látigo y espinos hasta que perezcan en la buena tierra.

La insensatez de todo esto es que estas son las mismas naciones grandes y poderosas y sus dioses que Yahweh ya había desposeído antes que ellos y el mismo pueblo que caminaba en temor de Israel. Pero ahora se están inclinando ante sus enemigos derrotados en el pasado.

Ahora note lo que Josué hace aquí en 23:14-16. Esta sección suena como las maravillosas promesas que teníamos en (21:43-45) de lo que Dios había hecho por Israel. Tiene esos elementos, pero note cómo Josué da la advertencia de cómo así como Dios guardó las buenas palabras y la bendición, Dios traerá las palabras calamitosas sobre ellos hasta que sean destruidos. Cuando el pueblo entra en transgresión, sirve a otros dioses y se inclina ante ellos, la ira de Dios arderá y perecerán. No deben engañarse a sí mismos. Dios siempre cumple su palabra.

Hermanos, escuchemos la advertencia de Josué al final de su vida. Esta es la sabiduría divina para cada uno de nosotros. Todos nosotros, en el centro de nuestro ser, somos adoradores. Dios nos hizo para adorar, será a él o para otra cosa. Como tal, necesitamos darnos cuenta de la naturaleza tentadora y atrapante de la idolatría y el pecado en nuestras vidas. Josué había visto esto en su vida con las generaciones del pueblo de Israel y en sus últimas palabras está advirtiendo apasionadamente a Israel que no repita el error.

Hace poco estuve en Facebook y vi un ejemplo ilustrativo de un hombre que tenía una pequeña serpiente que pensó que era inocente y empezó a crecer. Con el tiempo se hizo más grande y comenzó a tomar su brazo, luego controló su pierna, finalmente lo envolvió y, finalmente, estuvo listo para devorarlo. Esa es una ilustración de lo que Josué está describiendo aquí. Lo que alimentamos es lo que crece. Nadie comienza a pecar y piensa: "Sé que esto va a destruir mi vida y quiero tirar mi vida por la borda". Pero ahí es donde termina a medida que el poder de los pecados crece para apoderarse de nosotros.

La amenaza de la idolatría es real – Romanos 1:18-23 (24-32). ¿Quiénes son las personas de las que te rodeas y con las que pasas tu tiempo? ¿Te interesa el mismo tipo de intereses y pasiones que el mundo? ¿Estás hablando de los mismos deseos que el mundo? ¿Estás entregando tu tiempo, energía y esfuerzos para "servir" a esas cosas? ¿Les han dado su lealtad y no están dispuestos a separarse y no pueden imaginar una vida sin ellos?

Y permítanme hacer una advertencia muy fuerte: muchas veces, esto comienza con la persona que encuentras físicamente atractiva y con la que quieres casarte. Las amistades pueden ser desastrosas, pero casarse con la persona equivocada puede ser aún peor. Hace un par de semanas hablamos de cómo Dios cumple el 100% de sus promesas. Tenemos las mismas promesas acerca de estas cosas: serán lazo, trampa, látigo y espinos, y pereceremos (Josué 23:13). Tú y yo lo hemos visto. ¡Dios en su sabiduría a través de Josué nos está advirtiendo! ¡Por favor, escuche! El fin de ese camino es la muerte.

El camino a la vida (24:1-28)

Ahora, en contraste tenemos el capítulo 24 y tenemos aquí el camino de la vida y cómo luchar contra la idolatría y sus efectos desastrosos en nuestras vidas y (Romanos 1:18-23) muestra las claves.

Primero, necesitamos la verdad de lo que Dios ha hecho y recordar su guerra contra la injusticia. Pablo dice en Romanos 1:18-20 que estas personas suprimieron la verdad en injusticia y negaron la clara evidencia a su alrededor y eso los llevó por el camino de la idolatría y la muerte. Observe en 24:2-13 con qué frecuencia se registra el pronombre yo: 17 veces Dios se identifica a sí mismo y está ligado a las cosas asombrosas que Dios ha hecho. Dios ha estado en esta lucha contra la idolatría y la maldad humana durante mucho tiempo y se ve en la historia de Israel. Dios sacó a Abraham de una familia idólatra. Dios escogió a Jacob en lugar de a Esaú. Dios juzgó a la nación idólatra de Egipto. Dios juzgó y combatió a los amorreos idólatras. Dios los protegió del malvado rey Balac que sedujo a Balaam. Dios liberó al pueblo. Dios luchó por ellos. Dios les dio la victoria. Dios les dio la tierra. ¡Hasta este punto, ha sido la historia de Dios!

El camino a la vida entonces es recordar, recordar, recordar. La razón por la que leen sus Biblias por la mañana y por la noche es para recordarles esa historia y para recordar cómo Dios los está santificando y separando de las naciones malvadas y los ídolos que los rodean. Hermanos, la verdad de la palabra de Dios y ver el poder de Dios es una fuerte defensa contra las mentiras que el diablo nos dirá. Es fácil creer la mentira (Romanos 1:25). Es fácil no mantener a Dios en nuestra mente y reconocerlo (Romanos 1:28). Necesitamos la palabra de Dios por la mañana y por la tarde para evitar que nos desviemos a la izquierda o a la derecha y para mantenernos en el camino del éxito.

Eso nos lleva al siguiente paso en el camino de la vida. Segundo, debían glorificar a Dios y estar agradecidos. Pablo dijo que el siguiente paso en el camino hacia la idolatría era que las personas no lo glorificaban como Dios ni daban gracias (Romanos 1:21) ¿Por qué Josué dijo todas estas cosas? ¿Era simplemente para transmitirles los hechos y llenar sus cabezas de conocimiento? ¡No! Fue para ayudarles a construir un corazón que glorifique a Dios y esté agradecido con él. Glorificar a Dios se centra en alabarlo por todas sus maravillosas obras y las cosas que ha hecho por nosotros que nunca podríamos hacer por nosotros mismos. Luego, después de meditar sobre esas obras asombrosas, ¡nos sentimos abrumados de gratitud! ¿Por qué fue fiel esa generación? ¿Por qué permanecieron leales a Dios? Habían visto lo que Dios había hecho y lo recordaban (24:16-18). Hermanos, el agradecimiento y la gratitud forman una fuerte defensa contra la tentación. Si piensas que Dios no ha hecho lo suficiente en tu vida. Que Dios te está tendiendo. Que Dios no quiere lo mejor para ti. Entonces corres un gran riesgo de caer en las tentaciones del diablo. La solución es glorificar a Dios por sus asombrosas obras y estar agradecido por lo que ha hecho. Cuenta tus bendiciones. ¡Piensa en lo mucho que Dios ha hecho!

Tercero, debemos comprometernos completamente con Dios. Josué 24:14-15 es quizás la escritura más famosa de todo el libro y por una buena razón. Josué les pide que decidan: o sirven a Yahweh, que ha hecho tanto por vosotros, o vais a adorar a los dioses a los que sirvió Taré o a los de los amorreos. ¡Decidir! Hazlo hoy. Reúna los hechos y establezca su mente en el camino que va a seguir. No te quedes en la indecisión, el compromiso y la apatía. Si Yahweh es Dios, ¡sírvele! Y esta es una decisión que toda persona debe tomar. Padres, tomen esta decisión por su familia. Comprométete por completo. Siga el modelo de éxito y victoria que Josué había seguido. Profundiza en la palabra como si tu vida dependiera de ello. Obedécele como si tu vida dependiera de ello. Enseñe y guíe a su familia como si su vida dependiera de ello. ¡Comprométete con él!

La gente dice en 16-18: "Lejos esté de nosotros que abandonemos a Yahweh para servir a otros dioses" y "Nosotros también serviremos a Yahweh, porque él es nuestro Dios". Eso es lo que todos deberíamos decir. Pero mire esta advertencia de Josué en el versículo 19: "No podréis servir a Yahweh, porque él es un Dios santo. Es un Dios celoso..." Eso suena como una decepción de alguna manera. ¿Por qué lo hace? Porque los está llamando a ser testigos, porque tienen dioses extranjeros entre ellos.

Mira, muchas personas pueden decir verbalmente lo que los israelitas dicen aquí, pero si miras un poco más de cerca, todavía tienen sus ídolos con ellos. Jacob tenía ídolos en su casa. Los israelitas trajeron sus ídolos de Egipto. Los ídolos siguen ahí y amenazan. Dios es un Dios celoso, como un esposo celoso. Exige la completa fidelidad de su pueblo. Sin concesiones. ¿Por qué? Porque los ama y ha hecho todo por ellos. Él ha sido fiel. ¡Deben serlo!

Entonces, la imagen final aquí es de ellos haciendo un pacto, haciendo una estatua y juicio, escribiendo las palabras en el libro de la ley de Dios, y estableciendo un testigo. Este es nuestro cuarto y último paso: debemos incorporar recordatorios de las promesas de Dios y nuestro compromiso. Hemos puesto de relieve el peligro siempre presente del olvido. Dios sabe esto y ha dado convenios, reglas, la palabra de Dios y recordatorios físicos, todo para ayudar a la gente a recordar este día. Todo esto es como ver el día de tu boda todos los años y tener fotos de él por toda tu casa. ¿Por qué? Para recordar en los días duros. Para evitar que tu corazón divague. Ese es el valor de la lectura diaria de la Biblia y de tener las Escrituras a tu alrededor. ¡Nos mantiene enfocados!

¿Cómo terminarás tu historia? (Josué 24:29-33.)

Este libro termina con Josué y Eleazar muriendo y con ellos enterrando los huesos de José. Esa generación fue fiel hasta que esa generación pasó. La generación fiel ha pasado el testigo a la siguiente generación. Sin embargo, trágicamente, la siguiente generación fracasó en Jueces.

Eso plantea la pregunta: ¿cómo viviremos? ¿Cuál será nuestra historia? Iremos por el camino de toda la tierra como Josué y este pueblo. Las generaciones cambiarán. ¿Seremos fieles? Fíjate en la historia de José y lo que significa para nosotros. José fue fiel porque creía en Dios, en su palabra y en sus promesas. Confió en lo que Dios hizo a través de Josué para traerlos a la tierra. Él fue fiel en un mundo que estaba rodeado de idolatría ( Hebreos 11:22).

Tenemos una promesa de un Josué más grande en Jesús que nos da su Espíritu ahora para cambiar nuestros corazones donde podemos obedecer donde Israel falló. Pero mientras Josué aseguró una patria a través de la violencia que se perdió en la infidelidad, Jesús nos promete una tierra perfecta, un cielo nuevo y una tierra nueva donde mora la justicia y lo aseguró tomando toda la violencia humana sobre sí mismo. ¿Serás como José y Josué y vivirás toda tu vida y morirás con fe?
