The Temple: A Place of Healing (Acts 3:1-4:4)

In our last lesson, we took time and focused on the new community, the new temple, that was devoted to God for His glory. What we are seeing is a partial fulfillment of this idea of the water flowing out of the temple and bringing healing to the world. God’s Spirit is being poured out and is going into the world and bringing healing. Acts 2 showed us healing of relationships and divisions between people, it showed us a healing of the needs of others, it is the bringing in of blessing and joy to a group of people. Jesus is continuing to work like he did in the book of Luke, through the Apostles teaching and miracles he is bringing healing in the world.

This same concept will continue into chapter three with the healing of the lame man. But as we will see, while it is a wonderful blessing that this man has received in being healed, but this man is a sign (Acts 4:22) to a greater healing and blessing that God has for us.

The Healing (Acts 3:1-10)

As we turn the chapter, the story focuses on Peter and John and their interactions with the temple and its leaders in Jerusalem. This story happening at the temple seems to be of a special importance - seven times the temple is referred to in one way or another. As the two men come in, this man was looking to receive alms, but instead Peter said they did not have silver or gold, but he gives him the ability to walk. In an amazing way, this man who had been lame since birth is now walking, leaping, and praising God, and the people are filled with wonder and amazement. This seems to be an example of the kind of things the apostles were doing that caused awe among the people (Acts 2:43). But notice, this sign was done “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.” This is still a continuation of Jesus acting in the world.

However, I want you to notice, this man thought that money was what he needed, but God had something much more important to give him that solved his greater need - healing. But, as we will see, this man’s healing is a sign - something that is very important for the person, but that actually points to something greater that we all need.

The Explanation (Acts 3:11-16)

Notice that a crowd gathers around Peter and he immediately transitions the topic. First, he draws attention to the fact that it was not their own power or piety that made him walk. In contrast, he draws attention to what God has been doing in Jesus and the sins of the people. God glorified Jesus, but these people delivered him over to Pilate. They denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer. They killed the Author of Life, but God raised him up. They are witnesses of this entire story - a story that was spreading around Jerusalem.

But notice how he immediately transitions to the importance of faith in the name of Jesus. That is what made the man strong and gave him this perfect health. But the point is not for them to all come and receive physical healing like the man, it is for them to receive the greater healing that Jesus offers through his death - the forgiveness of sins.

Mark 2 is a good comparison text for this story. Remember when the friends brought the lame man to Jesus and he forgave his sins? The religious leaders at the time balked at this and thought he was blaspheming. But Jesus goes on to heal the man, and what was the reason? Mark 2:10 “But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” That man was healed as a means to a greater end - to show that Jesus has the authority to forgive sins. This is the same point here.

The healing of the lame man shows that Jesus is alive, risen from the dead, and continuing to work in the world. But this man is also a picture of spiritual life - a sign - for them and for us. How long had this man been lame? His whole life. He needed healing and there was nothing they could do to fix his condition. He had no power in of himself. His friends and family could only bring him to the temple for money. And money itself wasn’t able to solve the problem either. The only one who could provide what the man needed was Jesus. That’s the same truth for them and for us. This man’s healing proved Jesus’ authority and that’s where Peter goes.

The Opportunity (Acts 3:17-26)

Notice how Peter goes right to what the people needed to do for their sins so that they could find healing. God has been working this entire time. They acted in ignorance, but God used this to fulfill his plans that he foretold by the prophets to bring the Christ who would suffer for the redemption of the nation and all men.

Now, in order for them to have the complete healing they need, they must repent, turn back to God and have their sins blotted out so that they could receive the times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord that the sending of the Christ was all about. This is the same thing he said in (Acts 2:21, 38-39). When Jeremiah was describing the sins of Israel he said it like this (2:13), “for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.” That’s what Israel had been doing. That’s what sin is. Can you imagine the foolishness of doing such a thing? Yet that’s what we all do when we reject Jesus. We turn from life to death.

That’s what the story of the woman at the well is telling us. Her life up till the time of Jesus had been a mess. She was searching for something that would truly satisfy her life. Her life was full of sin and problems, and Jesus is offering her a fresh start and forgiveness. That’s what we must learn. Seeking your own way does not bring relief or refreshing, it brings misery and pain. It is just as foolish as reject a flowing stream for a container in the ground that won’t hold water. It is a waste of effort that brings us frustration and lack of satisfaction.

In contrast, that’s what the healing waters coming from the temple symbolized. We are those people who are lost in the desert and dying of thirst, but the giving of the Spirit brings the healing and refreshment that we are longing for. All our sins, every mistake we ever made, every evil that we ever committed can be washed away. We can have a fresh start.

Just like this man illustrates, the lame man cannot depend on himself. He knows that he needs help. He needs someone to care for him. In order for us to have the healing and refreshment that comes from the Lord we need the same conclusion. We cannot help ourselves. We cannot solve our own problems. We cannot make things better. We cannot give ourselves the relief we need. Without Jesus we are stuck with a life that will never satisfy. But with Jesus we can finally have our greatest needs met. We need to return to the fountain of living waters.

This is only the start of what Jesus is doing for us. Notice what he says: The prophets have been speaking about three distinct time periods that correspond to Psalm 110:1. They prophesied of Jesus sitting down at the right hand - that’s the suffering, death, and resurrection and ascension of Jesus. They spoke about a current time, the “until”, where Jesus is in heaven as the prophet that speaks and brings healing to us. He is like Moses who gives us God’s word and shows us how to be the people of God. If we accept him now we will be part of his people, and we can receive this first blessing of being turned away for our wickedness.

But notice how long Jesus will be there, he will be there until the time for restoring all things. The story does not end there. We have not experienced the resurrection. Not all enemies have been defeated. There is a full and complete healing that will come about when Jesus returns - a perfect health - that this man is a symbol of. That’s what the prophets have been speaking of as well. They give us the full story that we only experience in part now.

So realize the point, the reason that God has raised up Jesus - in the cross, in the resurrection, in the ascension of Jesus - is to bless you by turning you away from your sins. This is part of the blessing that God has been working on since the days of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob! God is trying to turn you from your evil ways. God is not content to let you go your own way like a dying man in the desert. God is set on blessing you and turning you back to him for healing.

The Decision (Acts 4:1-4)

Now notice where this story ends - it ends with a decision. Peter’s point is that Jesus in heaven now and speaking the words to his audience, if they listen they will be part of the true Israel, but if they reject him they will be cut off - permanently.

With that being said, the religious leaders - the ones who stand for the authority of the old temple come up and they are greatly annoyed. Notice what group it is: It’s the Sadducees. And why are they upset? They were teaching about the resurrection.

Remember, for the most Jews, the resurrection was not one person in the middle of time. What most of the Jews believed was that there would be a whole world resurrection at the end of time. This includes a final judgment of evil, righting of wrongs, and restoration of all things. It is the fact that Jesus was raised independently in the middle of time that was the sign that the new order had begun and that he was the Son of God and the true prophet. They are rejecting the authority of Jesus and his followers that is verified by the resurrection. That old temple is waging war against the new temple of Jesus and his body - they throw them in prison. The old order does not accept the authority of Jesus or his apostles.

But, despite the opposition, many believed it. These people understood the present and future elements of the kingdom - of the resurrection. They understood who Jesus was and what was being taught, they believed it and the number grew to about 5,000 men. This was another huge day for the advance of the gospel.

What’s the point then for us? You have to make a choice. Let me illustrate from another healing of another lame man. In John 5, there was a man at a different gate in Jerusalem. He was blind, lame, and paralyzed. He had been that way for 38 years. Jesus saw him and knew he had been laying there a long time and he said “Do you want to be healed?” That was the choice.

But notice what he went on to say that day about the resurrection - John 5:19-29. Jesus was going to do greater works so that they would marvel, just like we see here (Acts 3:10). If they honored Jesus, they would honor the Father. If they dishonored Jesus, they would dishonor the Father. Whoever heard his word and believed would have eternal life, not come into judgment, and pass from death to life. That resurrection would start right then when people heard his voice and live because he has life in himself and authority. But there is a future time where everyone will hear his voice and come out. If they did good, it will be resurrection of life, and those who did evil will have a resurrection of judgment. That’s our two options.

These same religious leaders hated Jesus then and rejected the message. They didn’t want to be healed by Jesus - they didn’t think they needed healing! Now, likely the same religious leaders are responding to Peter in the same way. As a result they are on a path to destruction.

You can go on like the Sadducees and reject the authority of Jesus. You can try to maintain your life as it is. You can follow the path of self destruction. You can reject the message of Jesus and not experience life - true life - when Jesus raises the dead. You can reject that in an effort to please yourself and you follow a path like they did - a temple doomed to destruction.

Or, you can listen to Jesus and resurrection life can start right now. Just like these men have pointed to, life can start again and you can begin experiencing that now. Then when Jesus calls everyone on the last day, you will be raised to never die again. You can accept the message of healing that is coming from Jesus and be part of the eternal temple, the true temple of God. What will your decision be?

La sanación (Hechos 3:1-10)

Al avanzar en el capítulo, la historia se centra en Pedro y Juan y sus interacciones con el templo y sus líderes en Jerusalén. Esta historia que sucede en el templo parece tener una importancia especial: siete veces se hace referencia al templo de una forma u otra. Cuando los dos hombres entran, este hombre buscaba recibir limosna, pero en cambio Pedro dijo que no tenían plata ni oro, pero que le da la capacidad de caminar. La curación del cojo muestra que Jesús está vivo, resucitado de entre los muertos y sigue trabajando en el mundo. Pero este hombre es también una imagen de la vida espiritual, una señal, para ellos y para nosotros. ¿Cuánto tiempo había estado cojo este hombre? Toda su vida. Necesitaba curación y no había nada que pudieran hacer para arreglar su condición. No tenía poder por sí mismo. Sus amigos y familiares solo podían llevarlo al templo por dinero. La oportunidad (Hechos 3:17-26)

Todos nuestros pecados, cada error que hayamos cometido, cada mal que hayamos cometido, pueden ser lavados. Podemos tener un nuevo comienzo.

Tal como lo ilustra este hombre, el cojo no puede depender de sí mismo. Sabe que necesita ayuda. Necesita que alguien lo cuide. Puedes rechazar eso en un esfuerzo por complacerte a ti mismo y seguir un camino como el de ellos: un templo condenado a la destrucción.

O bien, puedes escuchar a Jesús y la vida de resurrección puede comenzar ahora mismo. Tal como lo han señalado estos hombres, la vida puede comenzar de nuevo y puedes comenzar a experimentarla ahora. Entonces, cuando Jesús llame a todos en el último día, resucitarás para no morir nunca más.
