Consider Your Ways (Haggai 1:1-15)

As part of our yearly theme of “You are the temple of God”, I want us to begin another series called a Tale of Two Temples. To begin, I want us to start in the book of Haggai. Haggai comes after the exile and help forms a bridge to the concepts of the Temple in the new testament.

Now, we might wonder, why are we looking at a book from the old testament for this concept? The reason is because we have a similar challenge to build the temple of God. In (1 Corinthians 3:9) Paul told the church that they are God’s building and then used construction language for what he and others did with the church there (10-15). In (Ephesians 2:20-22), Paul emphasized the idea of how we are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. In (1 Peter 2:4-5), Peter uses a similar image of us at God’s spiritual house and each of as living stones. This means that while they were building a physical building, we are in the process of building a spiritual house. We will read about them having a physical construction site, but we must read it with the building up of our local church and God’s kingdom in mind. Collectively, and individually (1 Corinthians 6), we need to understand our identity as God’s temple and to be about the business of building it up to God’s glory.

The History of the Temple

To fully appreciate Haggai, we need to begin with the story to this point. In our last series we discussed the concept of God’s glory and idolatry from Exodus 32-34. In the sections before (Exodus 25-31) and after (Exodus 35-40), we have extensive instructions about the preparation and construction of the tabernacle - the precursor to the temple.

Remember the importance of this structure - It was constructed according to specific guidelines with an elaborate system of purification and sacrifice in order that the people would be holy and God could dwell with them. This must not be understated or under appreciated. It was a unique relationship that God had with Israel and the tabernacle was a special and holy place.

Over the process of time, David lived in a nice, cedar house and had the good idea of making a house for God (1 Kings 8:18). Even though God did not allow David to make it, David made many preparations for the process and Solomon was the one who constructed it. In 1 Kings we have the elaborate construction process and in chapter 8 Solomon prays and God’s glory fills the temple like back during the time in the tabernacle. This was a golden age for Israel.

However, quickly, Solomon turned away from God, the nation was divided, and we have the human worship created by Rehoboam that challenged the temple system in Jerusalem. Eventually, the people grew worse and worse till the fact that God destroyed Jerusalem and the temple in 587 B.C. by the Babylonians, as predicted by Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. This was absolutely devastating to the people. They believed that because they had the temple, they would not fall. But, because of their rampant wickedness God allowed his city and temple to be destroyed and the people were taken into exile.

But, during this time there was good news. Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, all spoke of future hope - things like a new Jerusalem where all the nations would enter, a new covenant with true forgiveness of sins, a new and glorious temple, and more. In a miraculous way, the return begins with dedicated and spiritual Israelites being led by Joshua and Zerubabbel to rebuild the temple (Ezra 1-6) and the future seemed bright, but there were challenges on the horizon. Not long after the people returned by Cyrus decree, there were adversaries that opposed the construction. Then, things changed in the empire and construction of the temple was stopped completely after a couple years of work, and the work remained stopped for 16 years!

But, it was during this dark and depressing time that we have these words from Ezra 5:1-2. Haggai and Zechariah are sent from God with words to encourage the people to rebuild.

The wrong priorities of the People (Haggai 1:1-6)

If we look at the structure of the book, there are four main messages that Haggai has for the people, they each address the discouragements and challenges that people had to overcome in order to build the temple. Our plan today is to cover the first main message of Haggai.

In verse two, we have divine insight from God into the heart and words of the people. These people said “the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.” When these people looked at the events around them, they had convinced themselves that the time was not appropriate. Now, there many have been legitimate reasons for this thinking. The people had started the work - they build an altar, laid the foundation, etc, but the political dynamic during the time was tumultuous because of a rebellion. But there are many other reasons the people could have delayed, maybe they had other projects they felt were more pressing, maybe the financial situation didn’t look very good. While we’re not given all the details on why the people said this, we know how easily it is to procrastinate and put the work off. All that time, God patiently waited on the people - even, the spiritually committed were set back

Notice how God responds - he addresses two problems with the people. First, the people have no problem working on their own nice paneled houses during this time. The condition of their houses compared to the house of God spoke volumes. These people did not have a heart like David that stopped to consider their conditions compared to God’s house. The real tragedy here is that the house of God was in this condition and the people did not care. Or if they did, they had simply brushed it aside and delayed in the repair process. This was a heart issue!

Second, God draws their attention to their own lack of food, drink, clothing, and money. Now why does God do this? God is calling out their lack of spiritual priorities that show they have been unfaithful to the covenant. God is specifically referring to Deuteronomy 28:38-40 - these are the curses that would come upon the people when they were in the land.

What then was the solution? “Consider your ways”. They needed to take spiritual inventory of their lives. They needed to see that their priorities were out of order and that the construction of the temple was more important. Why? Because God is the very source of all blessing and gifts, he is the source of success. Consider Deuteronomy 28:1-14. Repeatedly it says, Yahweh will, Yahweh shall, Yahweh will command, Yahweh will establish, Yahweh will make you abound. Where does blessing and success come from? God. Everything is from him and for him.

Brethren, this is a consistent problem for God’s people - even the most spiritual of us. When challenges come, when our lives become busy, when we face discouragement, when we focus on our abilities, we can end up delaying the work of God and stop having God’s priorities in focus. We may say “I don’t have time to build up the temple, I have a job that I must do… I have a family to take care of… The circumstances aren’t right.. I don’t have enough money… I don’t have enough time…” Now notice, God is not saying the paneled houses were wrong for the people. They could have those things, and they were blessings from God, but they were secondary and to be obtained after God’s priorities had been served.

We need to remember that we would not have a job if it wasn’t for God. We would not have a family, or money, or time, if it was not for God’s generosity and provision. We need to remember that God is the source of blessing in all those areas. God can change things in our lives to bring more blessings and opportunities. We have to be faithful with what we have and focus on God. The answer then for us is to take stock of our lives, to consider our ways. Am I giving God my first fruits? Am I giving God my best efforts? If not, no wonder that the temple is not being built like it should. Brethren, there are lost people that need the gospel. There are saved people that need to be encouraged and edified. There are immature christians that need to grow. There are sick and suffering people that need help. The temple needs to be built!

The new priorities from Yahweh (Haggai 1:7-11)

God gives them the next steps they should prioritize. God tells them to go to the mountains and bring wood and rebuild the house. Why? So that God would be pleased and glorified. Notice, that’s what was missing in the people’s hearts. They were focused on their pleasing themselves instead of pleasing God. They were not struck by the glory of God and a desire to glorify Him. See, the reason the people failed wasn’t because they weren’t working hard, it was because God was blowing it away - they were running to their own houses.

God is so high and lifted up, God is so glorious and powerful. God is in control of everything and he expected covenant faithfulness from his people. God was not withholding these things because he hated his people, he is withholding them because he loves them. He is reminding them of their dependence on God for everything they have.

Now, while we do not have these same sets of covenant conditions, we do have a covenant and our obedience to that covenant can secure our blessings or failures. How we handle ourselves in our relationships, in our marriages, on our jobs, in the church, with our kids, etc, all have immediate and long lasting consequences.

You’ll notice that in our time, the answer is not to come up here and put some more rooms on this building, or to add more parking. What God is wanting is for you and me to take the time to grow as disciples, to be more involved and active in the local church, to be better brothers and sisters in Christ, to look out for the needy and suffering among us, to invite others and spread the gospel. There are so many things that need to be done.

Yet, you’ll notice that God is addressing their delayed obedience. It’s not that the people thought it was evil or that they were wanting to destroy the temple, it was simply neglect and procrastination - that’s what hurts churches, our families, our kids, and our relationships.

The response of the People (Haggai 1:12-15)

What then helped turn it around for the people? The people “listened”. That might not seem like very much, but if we are not listening to the message of God, then we are hardening our hearts in disobedience. Next, they feared Yahweh - this could include terror at punishment, but often times this is referring to deep reverence and respect. These people were reminded of their condition before their mighty and Holy God.

Further, they had a very encouraging message - Yahweh said “I am with you”. God had told them this in the past (Isaiah 44:28, 45:13) and God operated in miraculous ways with their return from the captivity. They needed to be reminded of it again. God is introduced as the LORD of HOSTS or Heaven’s armies (1:2, 5, 7, 9, 14). They need to remember that as He  gathers His people to accomplish His work. What a moment. In moments of discouragement, resistance, rebuke, and sin, it can be easy to be overwhelmed. God instead makes it clear that despite the firm rebuke He has given, He is still with them. If God was with them, then nothing would be able to stop them (Romans 8:31). They needed to believe God and His word.

Finally, Yahweh stirred up the spirit of the leaders and all the people. This is the result of God’s word on the heart of good and sincere people. These people’s spirits were moved by God’s word and the result was obedience - the work restarted. Now they were moving in the right direction again. Brethren, it’s very easy to suffer from the same problems that were present in Haggai’s day and be stuck in discouragement and apathy. That’s just where the Devil and God’s enemies wants us. The solution for motivating God’s people then is the same as it is today. In our times we have something even greater to stir our spirits - the gospel.

It is God’s grace shown to Paul that motivated him to serve - 1 Corinthians 15:9-10. Like the people, we have experienced a redemption by grace and we have been commissioned to rebuild. Why? Because that is what pleases and glorifies the Father. It’s the message and hope of the gospel - that we are freed from sin and death that motivates us - 1 Corinthians 15:54-58. Let’s be steadfast, always abound in the work. Our work is not in vain if it is done for God.

Are you listening to the Lord? Are you having deep reverence for Him? Are you aware of God’s presence? Are you believing His word? Brethren, those should stir our hearts to “go up to the mountains and bring wood and rebuild the house of God.” Is that you? Will you set your heart to consider your ways today? Will you commit to building up the temple of God? Will you take the next step in your obedience?

Considere sus caminos

Hageo viene después del exilio y ayuda a formar un puente hacia los conceptos del Templo en el nuevo testamento.

Ahora bien, podríamos preguntarnos, ¿por qué buscamos este concepto en un libro del Antiguo Testamento? La razón es que tenemos un desafío similar: construir el templo de Dios. En ( 1 Corintios 3 :9) Pablo le dijo a la iglesia que son el edificio de Dios y luego usó un lenguaje constructivo para lo que él y otros hicieron con la iglesia allí (10-15). En (Efesios 2:20-22), Pablo enfatizó la idea de cómo estamos siendo edificados juntos para ser morada de Dios por el Espíritu. En (1 Pedro 2:4-5), Pedro usa una imagen similar de nosotros en la casa espiritual de Dios y de cada uno de nosotros como piedras vivas. Esto significa que mientras ellos estaban construyendo un edificio físico, nosotros estamos en el proceso de construir una casa espiritual. Leeremos acerca de que tienen un sitio de construcción físico, pero debemos leerlo teniendo en mente la edificación de nuestra iglesia local y el reino de Dios . Colectiva e individualmente (1 Corintios 6), debemos comprender nuestra identidad como templo de Dios y ocuparnos de la tarea de edificarlo para la gloria de Dios .

La historia del templo

Para apreciar completamente a Hageo, debemos comenzar con la historia hasta este punto. En nuestra última serie discutimos el concepto de la gloria y la idolatría de Dios en Éxodo 32-34. En las secciones anteriores (Éxodo 25-31) y posteriores (Éxodo 35-40), tenemos instrucciones extensas sobre la preparación y construcción del tabernáculo, el precursor del templo.

Recuerde la importancia de esta estructura: fue construida de acuerdo con pautas específicas con un elaborado sistema de purificación y sacrificio para que el pueblo fuera santo y Dios pudiera habitar con ellos. Esto no debe subestimarse. Era una relación única que Dios tenía con Israel y el tabernáculo era un lugar especial y santo.

Con el paso del tiempo, David vivió en una bonita casa de cedro y tuvo la buena idea de hacer una casa para Dios (1 Reyes 8:18). Aunque Dios no permitió que David lo hiciera, David hizo muchos preparativos para el proceso y Salomón fue quien lo construyó. En 1 Reyes tenemos el elaborado proceso de construcción y en el capítulo 8 Salomón ora y la gloria de Dios llena el templo como durante el tiempo en el tabernáculo. Esta fue una edad de oro para Israel.

Sin embargo, rápidamente Salomón se alejó de Dios, la nación se dividió y tenemos la adoración humana creada por Roboam que desafió el sistema de templos en Jerusalén. Con el tiempo, el pueblo empeoró cada vez más hasta el hecho de que Dios destruyó Jerusalén y el templo en el año 587 a. C. por los babilonios, como lo predijeron Isaías, Jeremías y Ezequiel. Esto fue absolutamente devastador para la gente. Creían que debido a que tenían el templo, no caerían. Pero, debido a su maldad desenfrenada, Dios permitió que su ciudad y su templo fueran destruidos y el pueblo fue llevado al exilio.

Pero durante este tiempo hubo buenas noticias. Isaías, Jeremías y Ezequiel hablaron de esperanza futura: cosas como una nueva Jerusalén donde entrarían todas las naciones, un nuevo pacto con verdadero perdón de pecados, un templo nuevo y glorioso, y más. De manera milagrosa, el regreso comienza con los israelitas dedicados y espirituales guiados por Josué y Zorobabel para reconstruir el templo (Esdras 1-6) y el futuro parecía brillante, pero había desafíos en el horizonte. Poco después de que el pueblo regresara por decreto de Ciro, hubo adversarios que se opusieron a la construcción. Luego, las cosas cambiaron en el imperio y la construcción del templo se detuvo por completo después de un par de años de trabajo, ¡y el trabajo permaneció detenido durante 16 años!

Pero fue durante este tiempo oscuro y deprimente que tenemos estas palabras de Esdras 5:1-2 . Hageo y Zacarías son enviados por Dios con palabras para animar al pueblo a reconstruir.

Las prioridades equivocadas del Pueblo (Hageo 1:1-6)

Si miramos la estructura del libro, hay cuatro mensajes principales que Hageo tiene para el pueblo, cada uno de ellos aborda los desalientos y desafíos que la gente tuvo que superar para poder construir el templo. Nuestro plan hoy es cubrir el primer mensaje principal de Hageo.

En el versículo dos, tenemos una visión divina de Dios del corazón y las palabras del pueblo. Estas personas dijeron “ aún no ha llegado el momento de reconstruir la casa de Jehová . “ Cuando estas personas observaron los acontecimientos que los rodeaban, se convencieron de que no era el momento apropiado. Ahora bien, ha habido muchas razones legítimas para esta forma de pensar. La gente había comenzado el trabajo: construyeron un altar, pusieron los cimientos, etc., pero la dinámica política durante ese tiempo fue tumultuosa debido a una rebelión. Pero hay muchas otras razones por las que la gente podría haberse retrasado, tal vez tenían otros proyectos que consideraban más urgentes, tal vez la situación financiera no parecía muy buena. Si bien no se nos dan todos los detalles sobre por qué la gente dijo esto, sabemos lo fácil que es posponer las cosas y posponer el trabajo. Durante todo ese tiempo, Dios esperó pacientemente en el pueblo; incluso, los comprometidos espiritualmente fueron retrocedidos.

Observe cómo responde Dios: aborda dos problemas del pueblo. En primer lugar, la gente no tiene ningún problema en trabajar en sus propias casas con paneles durante este tiempo. La condición de sus casas en comparación con la casa de Dios lo decía todo. Estas personas no tenían un corazón como el de David que se detenía a considerar sus condiciones en comparación con la casa de Dios . La verdadera tragedia aquí es que la casa de Dios estaba en esta condición y a la gente no le importaba. O si lo hicieron, simplemente lo dejaron de lado y retrasaron el proceso de reparación. ¡Esto fue un problema del corazón!

En segundo lugar, Dios les llama la atención sobre su propia falta de comida, bebida, ropa y dinero. Ahora bien, ¿por qué Dios hace esto? Dios está denunciando su falta de prioridades espirituales que demuestran que han sido infieles al pacto. Dios se refiere específicamente a Deuteronomio 28:38-40 : estas son las maldiciones que caerían sobre el pueblo cuando estuviera en la tierra.

¿Cuál fue entonces la solución? “ Considera tus caminos ” . Necesitaban hacer un inventario espiritual de sus vidas. Necesitaban ver que sus prioridades estaban desordenadas y que la construcción del templo era más importante. ¿Por qué? Debido a que Dios es la fuente misma de todas las bendiciones y dones, él es la fuente del éxito. Considere Deuteronomio 28:1-14 . Repetidamente dice: Yahweh hará, Yahweh hará, Yahweh mandará, Yahweh establecerá, Yahweh os hará abundar. ¿De dónde viene la bendición y el éxito? Dios. Todo es de él y para él.

Hermanos, este es un problema constante para el pueblo de Dios , incluso para los más espirituales de nosotros. Cuando surgen desafíos, cuando nuestras vidas se vuelven ocupadas, cuando enfrentamos desánimo, cuando nos concentramos en nuestras habilidades, podemos terminar retrasando la obra de Dios y dejar de enfocarnos en las prioridades de Dios . Podemos decir : “ No tengo tiempo para construir el templo, tengo un trabajo que debo hacer … Tengo una familia que cuidar … Las circunstancias no son las adecuadas… No tengo suficiente dinero … No tengo suficiente tiempo …” Ahora observen, Dios no está diciendo que las casas con paneles fueran malas para la gente. Podían tener esas cosas, y eran bendiciones de Dios, pero eran secundarias y debían obtenerse después de que se hubieran cumplido las prioridades de Dios .

Necesitamos recordar que no tendríamos trabajo si no fuera por Dios. No tendríamos familia, ni dinero, ni tiempo, si no fuera por la generosidad y provisión de Dios . Necesitamos recordar que Dios es la fuente de bendición en todas esas áreas. Dios puede cambiar cosas en nuestras vidas para traer más bendiciones y oportunidades. Tenemos que ser fieles con lo que tenemos y centrarnos en Dios. La respuesta entonces para nosotros es hacer un balance de nuestras vidas, considerar nuestros caminos. ¿Le estoy dando a Dios mis primicias? ¿Estoy dando a Dios mis mejores esfuerzos? Si no, no es de extrañar que el templo no se esté construyendo como debería. Hermanos, hay personas perdidas que necesitan el evangelio. Hay personas salvas que necesitan ser animadas y edificadas. Hay cristianos inmaduros que necesitan crecer. Hay personas enfermas y que sufren que necesitan ayuda. ¡Hay que construir el templo!

Las nuevas prioridades de Yahweh (Hageo 1:7-11)

Dios les da los próximos pasos que deben priorizar. Dios les dice que vayan a las montañas, traigan leña y reconstruyan la casa. ¿Por qué? Para que Dios sea complacido y glorificado. Fíjense, eso es lo que faltaba en el corazón de la gente . Estaban enfocados en agradarse a sí mismos en lugar de agradar a Dios. No fueron impresionados por la gloria de Dios ni por el deseo de glorificarlo. Mira, la razón por la que la gente fracasó no fue porque no estaban trabajando duro, sino porque Dios se lo estaba llevando todo, estaban corriendo a sus propias casas.

Dios es tan alto y exaltado, Dios es tan glorioso y poderoso. Dios tiene el control de todo y esperaba fidelidad al pacto de su pueblo. Dios no estaba reteniendo estas cosas porque odiara a su pueblo, las está reteniendo porque los ama. Les está recordando su dependencia de Dios para todo lo que tienen.

Ahora bien, si bien no tenemos estos mismos conjuntos de condiciones de pacto, sí tenemos un pacto y nuestra obediencia a ese pacto puede asegurar nuestras bendiciones o fracasos. La forma en que nos comportamos en nuestras relaciones, en nuestro matrimonio, en nuestro trabajo, en la iglesia, con nuestros hijos, etc., tiene consecuencias inmediatas y duraderas.

Notarán que en nuestros tiempos, la respuesta no es venir aquí y poner más habitaciones en este edificio, o agregar más estacionamiento. Lo que Dios quiere es que usted y yo nos tomemos el tiempo para crecer como discípulos, para estar más involucrados y activos en la iglesia local, para ser mejores hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, para velar por los necesitados y los que sufren entre nosotros, para invitar a otros y difundir el evangelio. Hay tantas cosas que hay que hacer.

Sin embargo, notarás que Dios se está dirigiendo a su obediencia retrasada. No es que la gente pensara que era malo o que quisieran destruir el templo, fue simplemente negligencia y postergación; eso es lo que daña a las iglesias, a nuestras familias, a nuestros hijos y a nuestras relaciones.

La respuesta del Pueblo (Hageo 1:12-15)

¿Qué ayudó entonces a cambiar la situación para la gente? El pueblo “ escuchó ” . Puede que no parezca mucho, pero si no escuchamos el mensaje de Dios, entonces estamos endureciendo nuestro corazón en la desobediencia. Luego, temían a Yahweh; esto podría incluir terror al castigo, pero muchas veces esto se refiere a una profunda reverencia y respeto. A estas personas se les recordó su condición ante su Dios santo y poderoso.

Además, tenían un mensaje muy alentador: Yahweh dijo: " Yo estoy contigo " . Dios les había dicho esto en el pasado (Isaías 44:28, 45:13) y Dios obró de manera milagrosa con su regreso del cautiverio. Necesitaban que se lo recordaran nuevamente. Dios es presentado como el SEÑOR de los EJÉRCITOS o ejércitos del cielo (1:2, 5, 7, 9, 14). Necesitan recordar eso mientras Él reúne a Su pueblo para realizar Su obra. ¡Qué momento! En momentos de desánimo, resistencia, reprensión y pecado, puede ser fácil sentirse abrumado. En cambio, Dios deja claro que a pesar de la firme reprensión que les ha dado, todavía está con ellos. Si Dios estuviera con ellos, entonces nada podría detenerlos (Romanos 8:31). Necesitaban creer a Dios y Su palabra.

Finalmente, Yahvé despertó el espíritu de los líderes y de todo el pueblo. Éste es el resultado de la palabra de Dios en el corazón de las personas buenas y sinceras. Los espíritus de estas personas fueron conmovidos por la palabra de Dios y el resultado fue la obediencia: el trabajo se reanudó. Ahora volvían a avanzar en la dirección correcta. Hermanos, es muy fácil sufrir los mismos problemas que estaban presentes en los días de Hageo y quedar atrapados en el desánimo y la apatía. Ahí es precisamente donde nos quieren el diablo y los enemigos de Dios. La solución para motivar al pueblo de Dios entonces es la misma que lo es hoy. En nuestros tiempos tenemos algo aún mayor que conmueve nuestro espíritu: el evangelio.

Es la gracia de Dios mostrada a Pablo lo que lo motivó a servir – 1 Corintios 15:9-10 . Al igual que el pueblo, hemos experimentado una redención por gracia y hemos recibido el encargo de reconstruir. ¿Por qué? Porque eso es lo que agrada y glorifica al Padre. Es el mensaje y la esperanza del evangelio: que seamos libres del pecado y de la muerte lo que nos motiva ( 1 Corintios 15:54-58 ) . Seamos firmes , abundemos siempre en el trabajo. Nuestro trabajo no es en vano si se hace para Dios.

¿Estás escuchando al Señor? ¿Tiene usted una profunda reverencia por Él? ¿Eres consciente de la presencia de Dios ? ¿Estás creyendo en Su palabra? Hermanos, eso debería conmover nuestros corazones para “ subir a las montañas y traer leña y reconstruir la casa de Dios”. " ¿Eres tu? ¿Establecerás tu corazón para considerar tus caminos hoy? ¿Te comprometerás a construir el templo de Dios? ¿Darás el siguiente paso en tu obediencia?
